A Family Budget Doesn't Mean You Can't Have Fun

When a family first puts their budget together and decides to take back control of their finances one of the first things they cut spending on is entertainment. For many families going out and having fun tends to eat up much of their monthly budget and once they write it down on paper they are surprised at just how much they are spending on eating out, renting or going to the movies, and other fun family excursions.

Family budgets tend to be tight and finding extra money for fun stuff can be hard. Part of the problem is that in this day and age is nearly everyone equates having fun with spending money. While this is certainly true there are also ways to have fun while spending little to no money. The easiest way to do this is to choose one day or night a week for "Family Night".

Here are some ideas for the family on a tight budget to have some cheap entertainment.

1. Take the family for a picnic at the park or nearest open space area. If your kids are younger a park with playground equipment is a good choice. With older kids an open space park with hiking trails gives everyone a good opportunity to get in some exercise. Get the kids involved with the preparation as well, letting them help to make sandwiches and pack the picnic basket.

2. Go for a walk in the neighborhood. It's a good way for you and your kids to meet the people who live close by. Another thing you can do is let them ride their bikes while you walk. It gives them a little more freedom and is a good way to burn away some of that excess energy. You can also take the whole family for a bike ride instead of a walk, giving you and the kids a chance to explore more of the area where you live.

3. The local public library is a good place to spend some time with the family as well. Most people don't realize it but there is more to do at the public library then just check out books. You can check out videos, games, and use their computers to do things on the internet.

4. While it is not as easy to get out and about in the winter time there are still opportunities to have fun. If there is snow on the ground go sledding for part of the afternoon and then have hot chocolate when you return home.

As you can see the idea behind having fun on a tight family budget is to be creative. Spending money is not always necessary to have a good time with your kids, and the simple fact that you are spending time with them will pay off as they grow older having learned that a good time does not come out of the checking account.
